Day: Proper 15C
Lectionary Passage: Hebrews 11:29-12:2
Scripture Focus: Hebrews 12:1-2
Object: Pictures of a Marathon, Race-Walking, and Swimming
This morning I’ve got several pictures with me. This one is a picture of the marathon. Those folks have to run really, really, really far. This one shows race-walking. Even though it’s a foot race, it’s different than running because it is all about walking really fast. The last picture is of my favorite event: swimming. I love to cheer the swimmers on! All these sports have one big thing in common: they’re races.
And that reminds me of our Bible story for today. It tells us that following Jesus is kind of like a race. Like all races, our race to follow Jesus can get hard sometimes. But, thankfully, we have a huge crowd cheering us on. Some of those people are right here in our church. And when we get tired or hurt, then we can count on the Holy Spirit to give us an extra boost of energy. So remember to run the race every day and be good followers of Jesus.
Let’s pray: Dear God, help us to run the race of faith every single day and when we get tired to remember that crowd cheering us on and your Spirit giving us extra energy. Amen.
